Basic Information
Name: Hita Jinja (Hita Shrine)
Location: 2-4-6 Shiromachi, Hita City, Oita Prefecture
Enshrined Kami: Okura Nagasue (commonly known as Hitadon), Okura Nagahiro, Okura Nagahisa
Benefits: Success in competitions, good health, improvement in sumo skills, family safety

The Invincible Legend of “Hitadon,” the Kami of Sumo

The kami enshrined at Hita Jinja is Okura Nagasue, a powerful local lord from the Heian period who served as the Hita District Administrator. He is affectionately known by locals as “Hitadon.”

Hitadon was actually known for his immense “superhuman strength.” At the age of 16, he was summoned to Kyoto to participate in Tenran Sumo (sumo performed before the Emperor). There, he easily defeated Kokansha, a formidable wrestler from Izumo who was considered invincible at the time. Afterwards, he participated in Tenran Sumo 15 times over more than 30 years and never once lost, earning him the title of “legendary undefeated sumo wrestler.”

Even today, he is revered as the “kami of sumo,” and a magnificent sumo ring (dohyo) stands on the shrine grounds. The Japan Sumo Association always visits Hita Jinja to pay respects during their Hita regional tour, making it a special sacred site for the sumo world.

Mystery and Untold Story: The Determined “Last Step”

A very dramatic and slightly poignant legend about Hitadon’s final moments remains.

On his way back from Kyoto to Hita after a sumo festival (Sumo no Sechie), he was struck by a severe illness (high fever). Realizing his end was near, Hitadon declared, “I will not die until I step foot on the land of Hita,” and continued to walk with superhuman willpower.

The moment he reached Otsuru, the entrance to Hita, he reportedly sighed in relief, saying, “Finally, I have stepped on Hita’s soil…”, and then passed away. Today, a grave marker (gorinto, a five-tiered stone pagoda) stands at the location believed to be his final resting place, and many fans visit it along with Hita Jinja.

Its Aspect as a Sacred Site for the Anime “Attack on Titan”

Hita City is now famous as “Attack on Titan’s Hita,” attracting fans from all over the world as the hometown of Hajime Isayama, the author of the globally popular anime “Attack on Titan.”

In fact, Hita Jinja is also a must-see spot for fans. It is said that the themes of “Titans” and “overwhelming power” in the work overlap with the image of “Hitadon, unmatched in superhuman strength,” a legend that has been passed down in this region since ancient times.

While there are statues of Captain Levi in front of Hita Station and Eren and his companions at Oyama Dam, more and more fans are incorporating Hita Jinja into their pilgrimage routes to experience the roots of the story and Hita’s history, as it is considered the “guardian kami of Hita.” In particular, descriptions of Hitadon’s “imposing physique” (a very large and splendid build) somehow evoke the strength of the characters appearing in the work.

Highlights and Points for Worship

Upon entering the shrine grounds, the first thing that catches the eye are the “komainu with large faces.” Their somewhat humorous yet powerful expressions are befitting guardians of the kami of sumo. Next to the main hall (haiden) is a monument inscribed with the names of famous sumo wrestlers throughout history (such as Wakanohana, Takanohana, and Akebono), and visitors constantly come to gain strength before competitions.

Why not visit and experience Hita’s rich nature and the powerful energy emanating from this legendary sumo wrestler?

Nikko Toshogu Shrine, located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo shogunate, as a kami known as Tosho Daigongen. Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999, it is one of Japan’s most prominent power spots. But did you know that behind its magnificent and opulent decorations, numerous mysteries and urban legends lie hidden?

In this guide, we will thoroughly explain everything from basic information about Nikko Toshogu Shrine, which reveals deeper layers the more you learn about it, to spine-chilling mysteries, and even pilgrimage information essential for fans.

Basic Information about Nikko Toshogu Shrine:
Its location is 2301 Sannai, Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. The main enshrined kami is Tosho Daigongen (Tokugawa Ieyasu-ko). Major highlights include Yomeimon Gate (a National Treasure), the Three Wise Monkeys, the Sleeping Cat, and the Crying Dragon (at Yakushido Hall). A distinctive feature is its luxurious construction, incorporating over 5,000 intricate carvings and representing the pinnacle of architectural technology from its era.

1. The “Demon-Repelling Inverted Pillar” that Rejected Perfection
Yomeimon Gate, often considered a symbol of Nikko Toshogu Shrine, has 12 pillars. Of these, one pillar features carvings with an inverted pattern. This is known as the “Demon-Repelling Inverted Pillar.” Why was it intentionally inverted? In Japan, there has long been a belief that “a building begins to decay the moment it is completed.” By deliberately leaving one part unfinished or imperfect, the artisans imbued the pillar with their wisdom and prayers, hoping to ward off evil and ensure the building’s eternal preservation.

2. The Children’s Song ‘Kagome Kagome’ and the Mystery of Tokugawa’s Buried Treasure
One of the most famous urban legends surrounding Nikko Toshogu Shrine is that of Tokugawa’s buried treasure. There is a theory that the lyrics of the children’s song ‘Kagome Kagome’ are actually a coded message indicating the treasure’s hidden location. ‘Tsuru to Kame ga subetta’ (The crane and turtle slipped): In front of Okusha Hotou, which is Ieyasu’s mausoleum, stand rare statues of a crane (tsuru) and a turtle (kame). ‘Ushiro no shomen da are’ (Who is behind you?): The rumor suggests that gold for the restoration of the shogunate might be buried in the direction these statues point, or directly behind them. Such a romantic rumor continues to captivate many history enthusiasts to this day.

3. The “Immortal Ley Line” Connecting the North Star and Edo
The layout of Nikko Toshogu Shrine incorporates advanced feng shui and astronomy. It is said that Yomeimon Gate was designed so that the North Star is always positioned directly above it. It is believed that Ieyasu-ko intended to become a guardian watching over the peace and stability of Edo from the center of the universe. Furthermore, if you draw a straight line directly north from Edo Castle (the present-day Imperial Palace), you will find Nikko Toshogu Shrine at its end. This reveals the strategy of the great monk Tenkai, who sought to solidify the Tokugawa reign by establishing this “northern defense.”

4. The “Imagined Elephant” of the Genius Painter
Beneath the eaves of the Kamijinko (Upper Sacred Storehouse), there is a large elephant carving. This was drawn by Kano Tan’yu, a genius painter of the Edo period, but in fact, there were no real elephants in Japan at that time. Since Tan’yu depicted this elephant solely based on hearsay, its form—such as the shape of its ears and how the hair grows on its tail—differs slightly from a real elephant, making it an “imagined elephant.” It is a charming spot that reflects the rich imagination of people from that era.

Pilgrimage Information: Nikko in the World of Anime and Games
Nikko Toshogu Shrine and its surroundings appear as settings or motifs in many anime and games. ‘Puraore! Pride of Orange’ is a girls’ ice hockey anime set in Nikko City. Famous spots within the city, such as Nikko Toshogu Shrine and Shinkyo Bridge, are realistically depicted in the work, leading to enthusiastic fan pilgrimages. For ‘Touhou Project,’ while not a direct setting, Nikko Toshogu Shrine’s ‘Three Wise Monkeys’ and ‘Sleeping Cat’ are sometimes mentioned as motifs in Touhou Project’s book works (such as ‘Forbidden Scrollery’) or discussed among fans as potential inspirations for characters. In ‘Fate/Grand Order (FGO),’ in events related to the Tokugawa family (such as ‘Tokugawa Kaiten Meikyu Ooku’), the historical background of Nikko Toshogu Shrine and the presence of Ieyasu-ko sometimes hold crucial keys to the story, attracting attention from both history and game fans.

Nikko Toshogu Shrine is not merely a tourist destination; it is a place where the ambitions of one man, Tokugawa Ieyasu, the skills of the artisans who supported him, and mysteries that continue into the present day all converge. The next time you visit, be sure to look for the ‘Inverted Pillar’ and the ‘Crane and Turtle’ and ponder the stories hidden behind them.

Wakasahiko jinja, located in Obama City, Fukui Prefecture, is a renowned shrine that has been revered since ancient times as the ichinomiya (chief shrine) of Wakasa Province. This jinja holds fascinating stories that become more intriguing the more you learn, such as a grand legend connecting it underground to Tōdai-ji Temple in Nara, and the mystery of kami who appeared in foreign guises.

This time, we will delve into the charms of Wakasahiko jinja, a must-visit for history enthusiasts and power spot lovers alike.

1. The Mystery of Omizuokuri: Sending Sacred Water to Nara’s Tōdai-ji Temple

Essential to any discussion of Wakasahiko jinja is the Omizuokuri (Sending of Sacred Water) shingi, a sacred ritual held annually on March 2nd. This is a very rare event where holy water from Wakasa is sent to Nara, taking place prior to the Omizutori (Drawing of Sacred Water) ritual at Tōdai-ji Temple’s Nigatsu-dō Hall.

The Legend: An Apology from a Late Kami

Long ago, when Jitchu Oshō, the founder of Tōdai-ji Temple, invited kami from across the country for a Buddhist service, Onyū Myōjin (Wakasahiko no kami) from Wakasa was so engrossed in fishing that he arrived late. As an apology, the Myōjin promised to “dedicate the pure water of Wakasa to the principal deity of Nigatsu-dō Hall.”

It is said that when the Myōjin struck the ground at Nigatsu-dō Hall, water sprang forth, becoming the present-day Wakasai (Wakasa Well). The sacred water released from Unose in Obama is believed to travel underground for 10 days before reaching the well in Nara. This is a romantic bond, spanning over 1300 years, that transcends scientific proof.

2. Did the Kami Appear as Tōjin (Foreigners)?

The origin story of Wakasahiko jinja contains a highly mysterious account. It states that in Wado 7 (714 CE), when the kami descended to this land, they appeared as “Tōjin (foreigners) riding white horses.”

Both Wakasahiko no kami of the Kamisha (upper shrine) and Wakasahime no kami of the Shimosha (lower shrine) initially descended at a place called Shiraishi, upstream on the Onyu River. Why would Japanese kami appear in foreign attire? One theory suggests this indicates Wakasa’s role as a gateway for continental exchange since ancient times, and its deep connections with immigrant clans, sparking intrigue about ancient history.

3. The Story of the Married Kami and Their Kamisha (Upper Shrine) and Shimosha (Lower Shrine)

Wakasahiko jinja is divided into two separate shrines: the Kamisha (Wakasahiko jinja), which enshrines Hikohodemi-no-mikoto, also known as Yamasachihiko; and the Shimosha (Wakasahime jinja), which enshrines his consort, Toyotamahime-no-mikoto, also known as Otohime.

– Kamisha (Wakasahiko jinja): Enveloped in a dense forest, it exudes a tranquil and solemn atmosphere. Here, you will find the Meoto Sugi (Married Couple Cedars), two cedar trees joined at their roots, known as a powerful spot for warding off evil spirits and purification.
– Shimosha (Wakasahime jinja): Located approximately 1.5 km from the Kamisha, this shrine is famous for its divine blessings for safe childbirth, child-rearing, and matchmaking. Within its grounds stands the Sennen Sugi (Thousand-Year Cedar), a cedar tree over 1000 years old, whose overwhelming vitality is truly awe-inspiring.

4. A Surprising Aspect: Kami of Tatami and Interior Design

Wakasahiko jinja is actually also revered as a guardian kami of tatami mats and floor coverings. This originates from a legend that when the enshrined kami descended to this land, they were welcomed by laying down tatami. Even today, it is a “kami of the industry,” known to those in the know, with people from the interior design industry and tatami artisans visiting from across the country to pray for business prosperity.

Basic Information

Yahagi jinja, located in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, may appear at first glance to be a quiet neighborhood shrine, but it is actually a power spot where layers of history and mystery reside, from heroes of Japanese mythology and warriors of the Northern and Southern Courts period to the modern navy. This time, we will introduce several fascinating episodes associated with this jinja.

Basic Information
Location: 1 Hojuan, Yahagicho, Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture
Main kami: Susanoo-no-mikoto
Enshrined kami: Toyouke-no-Okami, Ukemochi-no-kami
Founded: Said to be in the 45th year of Emperor Keiko’s reign (around 315 AD)

—

1. Origin of the Name ‘Yahagi’: Did a Butterfly Transform into a Human to Carry Bamboo?
‘Yahagi’ is the name of this jinja, as well as a local place name and river name. Its origin dates back to the legend of Yamato Takeru no Mikoto’s eastern expedition.

When Yamato Takeru no Mikoto visited this area, he was asked to subjugate a band of brigands. He ordered his army to make arrows, but the high-quality bamboo needed for the arrows grew on a sandbank in the swiftly flowing Yahagi River, and no one could retrieve it.

At that time, a mysterious legend says that a butterfly appeared, transformed into a human, cut bamboo from the sandbank, and carried it back. It is said that 10,000 arrows were made overnight using this bamboo (from ‘ya o hagu’, meaning to fletch arrows), which is believed to be the origin of the name ‘Yahagi’. Today, ‘yatake’ (arrow bamboo), said to be descendants of that legendary bamboo, still grow in clusters within the shrine precincts.

2. The ‘Unari-ishi’ (Groaning Stone): A Mystery Foretelling Victory
To the southwest of the worship hall (haiden), a large stone enclosed by a fence is enshrined. This is the ‘Unari-ishi’ (Groaning Stone), associated with Nitta Yoshisada.

In 1335, when Nitta Yoshisada, who was about to challenge Ashikaga Takauji in battle, prayed for victory at this jinja, it is said that the stone suddenly began to tremble, emitting a ‘buzzing’ or ‘groaning’ sound. Yoshisada, convinced this was divine protection, rallied his army and achieved a splendid victory.

Today, this stone is still carefully preserved, and it is believed that visiting it before a contest or challenge may bring good fortune.

3. The Bond with the Light Cruiser Yahagi and Sacred Site Pilgrimage
Yahagi jinja has also played an important role in modern history. The shipboard shrine of the light cruiser ‘Yahagi’, which once belonged to the Imperial Japanese Navy, enshrined a bunrei (divided spirit) from this Yahagi jinja.

During the Taisho era, the captain and crew of the first ‘Yahagi’ light cruiser made an official visit and dedicated a precise 1/100 scale model of the ship. This model is still carefully preserved at the jinja today, making it a must-see spot for history and military enthusiasts.

Sacred Site Pilgrimage Information

For fans of the ship-girl ‘Yahagi’ from the popular game and anime ‘Kantai Collection -KanColle-‘, this jinja is an important sacred site. As the head jinja for the shipboard shrine, it is also known as a ‘pilgrimage site for admirals’ (teitoku) where fans from across Japan visit to pray for the character’s safety and good fortune.

4. The Yahagi jinja Grand Festival: A 300-Year Tradition
Held annually in October, the Yahagi jinja Grand Festival boasts a history of approximately 300 years. Two magnificent dashi (festival floats), designated as tangible folk cultural properties of Okazaki City, are paraded through the streets, engulfing the entire area in excitement.

Traditional ohayashi (festival music) performed atop the dashi and the historically significant carvings are also highlights.

—

From the mythology of Yamato Takeru no Mikoto and the miracle of Nitta Yoshisada to modern subculture, Yahagi jinja is a place that has embraced the wishes of many people across the ages. When you visit Okazaki, be sure to listen to the rustling of the yatake bamboo and experience its eternal history.

Imazu-cho, located in the northwestern part of Lake Biwa in Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture, is home to a jinja with a rather unusual name. It is called “Ashizumi Jinja and Yukisugi Tenmangu” (Ashizumi Jinja – Yukisugi Tenmangu). This site, where the names of two shrines are intertwined, holds a mysterious legend connected to the Heian period genius, Sugawara no Michizane, and a deep history stretching back to ancient times.

Basic Information
Location: 1228 Hirokawa, Imazu-cho, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture.
Enshrined Kami: Ashizumi Jinja enshrines Ashizumi no Mikoto, and Yukisugi Tenmangu enshrines Sugawara no Michizane-ko.
Annual Festival: May 4 (Imazu Matsuri).

The Mystery of the Name “Yukisugi”
Upon visiting this jinja, the first thing that catches the eye is its rare name, “Yukisugi,” which means “passing by” or “overpassing.” This name is associated with a somewhat poignant legend concerning Sugawara no Michizane-ko, who is renowned as the kami of scholarship.

During the Heian period, Michizane-ko was exiled to Dazaifu following the Shotai Incident. On his journey, as he passed through this area, his former students and admirers rushed to bid him a sorrowful farewell. However, as a condemned man, Michizane-ko, despite his reluctance, had to “pass through” this place without stopping.

From this episode, the area eventually became known as “Yukisugi.” It is said that when a Tenmangu jinja was later built to enshrine Michizane-ko, the name Yukisugi was adopted. Within the precincts, there remains a “Koshikake-ishi” (sitting stone) where Michizane-ko is believed to have rested, conveying his lingering regret and the deep affection of the local villagers to this day.

Ashizumi Jinja: Holding Ancient Mysteries
On the other hand, Ashizumi Jinja, whose name is also listed, is a Shikinaisha, meaning it was recorded in the Engishiki Jinmyocho, a document from the Heian period, indicating its extremely ancient history.

There is a mystery surrounding its enshrined kami, Ashizumi no Mikoto, as the exact identity is not fully known. One theory suggests a connection to the ancient Azumi clan, who once ruled this area. The Azumi clan is known for worshipping sea kami, and given the immense body of water that is Lake Biwa, it is highly probable that Ashizumi no Mikoto was revered as a kami of water or navigation here.

From the medieval period onward, as the worship of Tenmangu grew stronger, the name “Yukisugi Tenmangu” became more prominent. Yet, beneath it lies the quiet, enduring worship of the enigmatic kami “Ashizumi,” a tradition that has continued since ancient times.

Pilgrimage to a Sacred Site: A Setting for the Anime ‘Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!’
Imazu-cho in Takashima City, where Ashizumi Jinja and Yukisugi Tenmangu are located, is also known as one of the real-world locations that inspired the popular anime series ‘Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!’

In the anime, many scenes feature the area around Omi-Imazu Station, the nearest train station, and the landscapes along Lake Biwa. While the jinja itself is not depicted as a main setting, many fans visit it as part of their pilgrimage to “sacred sites” to immerse themselves in the anime’s atmosphere. The tranquil ambiance of the precincts exudes a somewhat fantastical charm that resonates with the anime’s world, making it an unmissable spot for fans of the series.

Highlights for Visitors
The jinja precincts are remarkably serene, enveloped in a solemn atmosphere created by ancient trees. Of particular note are the elaborate carvings on the main hall (honden). Furthermore, during the annual Imazu Matsuri in May, magnificent decorative floats (hikiyama) parade through the streets, creating a vibrant contrast to the usual tranquility.

A path once trod by Michizane-ko, and a place where ancient kami rest. Why not visit Ashizumi Jinja and Yukisugi Tenmangu, where the visible stage of history and its hidden depths intertwine, and experience a romance that transcends time?

Sendai Toshogu jinja, located in Aoba Ward, Sendai City, is dedicated to Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu. This jinja is renowned for its magnificent and elaborate shrine buildings, constructed with the full might of the Date clan, standing alongside those at Nikko and Kunozan. However, did you know that behind its splendor lies a secret: a grand “mystery” that involves the Date clan’s struggle for survival and a strategy to protect the city of Sendai?

This article will delve into the fascinating history and secrets of Sendai Toshogu, a must-visit for history enthusiasts and spiritual seekers alike.

Basic Information
Location: 1-6-1 Toshogu, Aoba Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture.
Enshrined kami: Tosho Daigongen (Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu)
Established: Shoo 3 (1654)
Founder: Date Tadamune (Second Lord of the Sendai Domain)
Cultural Assets: The Honden (main hall), Karamon (Chinese gate), Sukibei (lattice wall), Zuishinmon (gate with guardian figures), and Ishi Torii (stone torii gate) are designated National Important Cultural Properties.

—

1. The Hexagram Barrier Mystery Protecting Sendai

Indispensable to understanding Sendai Toshogu is the legend of the “hexagram” (rokubosei) that encircles the Sendai castle town.

It is said that Date Masamune, the founder of the domain, arranged key jinja in a specific pattern to create a massive spiritual barrier (kekkai) to protect Sendai from disasters. Sendai Toshogu is situated at the “northeast” (kimon, or ‘demon’s gate’) point of this hexagram. By enshrining Ieyasu, a symbol of the Edo shogunate, the Date clan is believed to have sought the strongest protective power.

When the vertices of this hexagram are connected, a precise geometric shape emerges. Even today, occult enthusiasts whisper that “Date Masamune’s urban planning might have been a magical array.”

2. The 100,000 Ryo Debt and a Hidden Story of “Loyalty”

Why did the Date clan construct such a magnificent Toshogu? The truth reveals a poignant drama of “repaying a debt of gratitude.”

During the era of Date Tadamune, the second lord, the Sendai domain suffered great fires and floods, pushing its finances to the brink of collapse. At that critical time, the domain averted disaster by borrowing a colossal sum of 100,000 ryo (worth hundreds of billions of yen today) interest-free from the shogunate.

To repay this immense debt of gratitude and to demonstrate the Date clan’s “unwavering loyalty to the shogunate,” Tadamune dedicated the domain’s full resources to building this Toshogu. This grand undertaking, spanning five years and involving over 800,000 laborers, was truly a project born of the Date clan’s pride.

3. The Ishi Torii That Traveled 700km Across the Sea

The imposing “ishi torii” (stone gate) standing at the entrance to the approach path is not made from stone quarried in Miyagi Prefecture.

It is made from granite specifically transported by sea from Inujima, Bizen Province (present-day Okayama Prefecture), the hometown of Furihime, Tadamune’s principal wife and a granddaughter of Ieyasu. Transporting such massive stone materials from the Seto Inland Sea all the way to Tohoku was an incredibly difficult feat at the time. This torii, symbolizing the deep ties between the Tokugawa and Date clans, still exudes dignity as the oldest stone torii in the prefecture.

4. “Messengers of Peace” Hidden in the Zuishinmon Gate

Take a close look at the hengaku (framed plaque) displayed on the Zuishinmon (gate with guardian figures), which is a National Important Cultural Property. There is a legend that the form of a “water bird” is subtly hidden within the characters spelling “Toshogu.”

Water birds are considered creatures that favor peace, and it is said that this inclusion expresses a wish for an end to an era of conflict and for long-lasting peace. When you visit, be sure to look closely and try to find it.

5. Pilgrimage Spot Information: Anime ‘Wake Up, Girls!’

Sendai Toshogu is also known as a pilgrimage site for the idol anime “Wake Up, Girls!”, which is set in Sendai.

In the series, characters are depicted visiting the jinja for Hatsumode (New Year’s shrine visit) and even training within the shrine precincts. The long stone staircase and the Zuishinmon, in particular, are highly accurately reproduced. Even today, it remains a popular spot visited by many fans, known as “WUGNERs” (fans of the work).

—

Sendai Toshogu is more than just a historical building; it is a captivating place where the Date clan’s strategic genius, their sentiments towards the Tokugawa clan, and even modern anime culture intersect.

It boasts excellent accessibility, just a 3-minute walk from Toshogu Station on the JR Senzan Line. When you visit Sendai, be sure to step into this “corner of the spiritual barrier” and feel its power firsthand.

Kawaguchi Asama jinja, located in Fujikawaguchiko-machi, Minamitsuru-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture, is an ancient jinja boasting over 1100 years of history and is one of the component parts of the Mount Fuji World Cultural Heritage site. Known locally as “Asama jinja,” it is revered as a powerful spot with a very strong background, said to have been established to appease Mount Fuji’s eruptions.

Basic Information
Location: Kawaguchi 1, Fujikawaguchiko-machi, Minamitsuru-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture
Enshrined kami: Asama no Okami (Konohanasakuya-hime no Mikoto)
Founded: Jogan 7 (865 CE)

Mount Fuji’s Great Eruption and the “Kami’s Demand”: The Mystery Behind the Jinja’s Origins

The founding of this jinja is deeply connected to an unprecedented disaster that occurred during the Heian period. In Jogan 6 (864 CE), a tremendous eruption known as the “Jogan Great Eruption” occurred at Mount Fuji. The lava flow was so powerful it filled the vast lake “Senoumi,” dividing it into what are now Lake Saiko and Lake Shojiko.

People at the time perceived this eruption as “Mount Fuji’s kami (Asama no Okami) being angered.” Records state that the kami, possessing an official, demanded that a shrine be built to enshrine itself in Kai Province (present-day Yamanashi Prefecture). In response, Kawaguchi Asama jinja was established the following year by imperial decree. In other words, this sacred site was born as “the frontline for directly appeasing Mount Fuji’s wrath.”

The Legend of the “Seven Cedar Trees,” 1200-Year-Old Sacred Boundary Markers

Upon entering the jinja grounds, visitors are first overwhelmed by the massive cluster of cedars known as the “Seven Cedar Trees” (Nanahonsugi). These are said to have been planted when the jinja was founded, and all of them are Natural Monuments designated by Yamanashi Prefecture, boasting over 1200 years of age.

Of particular note are the “Father and Mother” (futahashira), the 5th and 6th cedar trees. These two trees are believed to symbolize Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto, the two primordial kami, and are worshipped as powerful “matchmaking cedars.” A romantic legend persists that if a man walks around the outside of the trees from the right, and a woman from the left, and then both pass between the cedars together to offer prayers, they will be united.

Modern Marvel: The “Torii in the Sky”

In recent years, an observation point (yohaisho) known as the “Torii in the Sky” (Tenku no Torii) has gained explosive popularity on social media. It is located about a 30-minute uphill walk from the jinja.

This spot was originally established in 2019 as a sacred place to worship Mount Fuji from a distance. The view of Mount Fuji’s entire panorama through the torii gate is truly an entrance to the “realm of the kami.” While an interesting backstory reveals this location was developed on the chief priest’s private land, it is now visited by many worshippers as a precious place to experience the reverence for Mount Fuji.

Please note: A cooperation fee (around 200 yen) may be required for photography, and respectful worship is expected.

Anime Pilgrimage Information: As a Setting for “Encouragement of Climb”

Kawaguchi Asama jinja is also known as a sacred site for the popular climbing-themed anime, “Encouragement of Climb” (Yama no Susume).

In the Season 2 episode featuring the ascent of “Mitsutoge-san,” the main character Aoi and her friends chose the path leading to Kawaguchi Asama jinja as their descent route. The anime faithfully depicts the solemn jinja grounds steeped in history and the avenue of giant cedars, drawing a continuous stream of fans who enjoy anime pilgrimages combined with mountain climbing.

The Cleansing Power Spot: “Mother’s White Waterfall”

Further beyond the jinja, and even higher than the Torii in the Sky, lies “Mother’s White Waterfall” (Haha no Shirataki). This was once a place where people aspiring to climb Mount Fuji performed “misogi” (ritual purification).

Beside the waterfall stands Haha no Shirataki jinja, enshrining Takuhatachiji-hime no Mikoto, the mother kami of Konohanasakuya-hime no Mikoto. It is a hidden power spot known to few, filled with the raw yet pure energy of water, distinct from the tranquility of the main jinja.

Kawaguchi Asama jinja, where the immense power of Mount Fuji intertwines with the prayers of those who sought to appease it. Walking along the approach path surrounded by ancient trees, you will surely feel the spirit of this sacred realm that has endured for 1200 years.

In Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture, a historic town that once served as the provincial capital (kokufu) of Totomi Province (Totoumi no Kuni), stands Awano Kunitama Jinja, quietly yet with an unmistakable air of dignity.

While its grounds may appear tranquil at first glance, this is actually a highly prestigious Soja (Shrine of All Kami), a unique place where you can worship all the kami of Totomi Province at once. In this article, we will delve into the mysteries hidden within this jinja, the story of its unusual Komausagi (guardian rabbits), and its connection to a popular anime.

Basic Information
Location: 2452-2 Mitsuke (Babacho), Iwata City, Shizuoka Prefecture
Main Kami Enshrined: Okuninushi no Mikoto
Shrine Status: Soja of Totomi Province, Shikinaisha, Former Prefectural Shrine

1. The Mystery of the Name “Awa”: A Kami from Lake Biwa?
The word “Awa” (or Omi) in the jinja’s name might make many people think of “Omi” in Shiga Prefecture.

In fact, there is a mysterious legend surrounding the history of this jinja. One theory suggests that the main kami, Okuninushi no Mikoto, once came to this land from Lake Biwa in Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture).

On the other hand, Hamanako Lake in western Shizuoka Prefecture was historically known as “Totsu Awaumi” (the distant freshwater lake), which is the origin of the name “Totomi.” It is also said that the jinja was named “Awano Kunitama” to enshrine the spirit of this land, contrasting with Lake Biwa’s “Chikatsu Awaumi” (the nearby freshwater lake). This gives the name a romantic quality, evoking a sense of ancient connections between the east and west.

2. A Sacred Site for Matchmaking Welcomed by Komausagi (Guardian Rabbits) Instead of Komainu (Guardian Dogs)
Visitors to Awano Kunitama Jinja are not greeted by the usual komainu (guardian dogs) in front of the worship hall (haiden). Instead, they are met by adorable “Komausagi” (guardian rabbits).

Why rabbits? This is because the main kami is Okuninushi no Mikoto, also known as Daikoku-sama. Okuninushi no Mikoto famously helped a wounded rabbit in the myth of “The White Rabbit of Inaba.” Due to this connection, rabbits are cherished here as messengers of the kami.

These Komausegi are not only unusual but also popular as symbols of “enmusubi” (matchmaking or good relationships). It is said that gently stroking them will bring good fortune in relationships.

3. A Soja: The Ultimate Power Spot
During the Heian Period, provincial governors (kokushi), who were assigned from the capital, had a duty to visit and pay respects at all the major jinja within their province. However, traveling throughout the vast Totomi Province was a formidable task.

To address this, a “Soja” was established near the provincial capital. This system allowed all the kami of the province to be enshrined together, making it possible to pay respects to all of them by visiting just this one location – an incredibly time-efficient solution.

In other words, visiting Awano Kunitama Jinja brings the same blessings as paying respects to all the kami throughout Totomi Province. It is truly a place worthy of being called the “ultimate power spot.”

4. A Hidden Spot for “Yuru Camp△” Anime Pilgrimage
Speaking of the Mitsuke area in Iwata City, it is also famous as a pilgrimage site for the anime “Yuru Camp△” (Laid-Back Camp), beloved by camping enthusiasts.

Mitsuke Tenjin (Yanahime Jinja), which protagonist Rin Shima visited in episodes like Season 2, Episode 2, is located right next to (within walking distance of) Awano Kunitama Jinja.

When anime fans visit Mitsuke Tenjin in search of the “Shippei Taro” legend, Awano Kunitama Jinja is a common accompanying stop. The landscape, woven from the retro Western-style architecture of the adjacent Former Mitsuke School and the traditional Japanese ambiance of the jinja, forms an essential route for experiencing the historical atmosphere of Mitsuke-juku, which served as a setting for the anime.

5. Deep Connection to the Mysterious Midnight “Mitsuke Tenjin Hadaka Matsuri”
The “Mitsuke Tenjin Hadaka Matsuri” (Naked Festival) is a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. In fact, Awano Kunitama Jinja plays a crucial role in the climax of this festival.

Late at night, a mikoshi (portable shrine) departs from Mitsuke Tenjin and processes (togyo) through the darkness to Awano Kunitama Jinja. Here, at this Soja, a mystical ritual takes place where the kami interact. A tradition where fervor and stillness intertwine, unimaginable from its usual quietude, continues to thrive.

Awano Kunitama Jinja is highly recommended for history buffs and shrine-goers, as well as those looking to be charmed by the adorable Komausegi, and even fans of “Yuru Camp△.”

Why not visit it along with the adjacent Former Mitsuke School and experience the profound history of Totomi firsthand?

Kirishima Jingu, located in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, enshrines Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Amaterasu Omikami, as its main kami. It is known as the magnificent power spot where the “Tenson Korin” (Descent of the Heavenly Grandson) described in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki took place. In 2022, its Honden (main sanctuary), Heiden (offering hall), and Haiden (worship hall) were designated National Treasures. With its gorgeously ornate vermilion-lacquered shrine buildings, it is also called the “Nikko of the West”.

Basic Information about Kirishima Jingu

Location: 2608-5 Kirishimataguchi, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture
Main Kami: Ninigi-no-Mikoto
Main Highlights: The National Treasure-designated shrine buildings, the approximately 800-year-old sacred tree (goshimboku), and Sakurajima volcano viewed from the observation deck.
History: It is said to have been founded in the 6th century, originally located near the crater of Mt. Takachiho. After repeated destruction by volcanic eruptions and subsequent reconstructions, the current shrine buildings were donated by Shimazu Yoshitaka, the lord of the Satsuma Domain, approximately 300 years ago.

Sakamoto Ryoma’s “Prank”? The Story of Japan’s First Honeymoon

Kirishima Jingu is also famous as the place visited by Sakamoto Ryoma, a samurai activist from the late Edo period, and his wife Oryo on what is considered “Japan’s first honeymoon”. Ryoma, injured in the Teradaya Incident, visited Kirishima Onsen at the recommendation of Saigo Takamori and others. During their stay, the couple ascended Mt. Takachiho.

Here’s a famous anecdote. When Ryoma saw the legendary “Ama no Sakahoko” (Heavenly Spear of Reverse Position) thrust into the mountaintop, he wrote to his elder sister Otome: “The face carved on the sakahoko looked like a tengu, and we both laughed heartily”. Even more surprisingly, there’s an episode that Ryoma reportedly pulled out this sacred sakahoko with a “Heave-ho!” (Note: This is strictly forbidden today, of course). It’s a charming legend that conveys Ryoma’s free-spirited personality and the couple’s deep affection.

Mysteries Beyond Scientific Explanation? The “Seven Wonders of Kirishima”

Around Kirishima Jingu, there are “Seven Wonders” that have been passed down since ancient times. We invite you to look for these mysteries during your visit.

1. Kame-ishi (Turtle Rock): A natural stone on the old approach path that perfectly resembles a turtle. Legend says it is a turtle that was turned into stone for breaking a promise with a kami.
2. Kaze-ana (Wind Cave): A place where a faint breeze was said to constantly blow out from a rock cave.
3. Mitarashigawa (Purification Stream): A mysterious river that dries up in winter but suddenly gushes forth with a large amount of water around May, at which time fish also appear.
4. Yonaka no Kagura (Midnight Kagura): When the jinja was moved to its current location, it is said that the sounds of kagura (sacred Shinto music and dance) echoed from deep within the empty shrine buildings late at night.
5. Makazu no Tane (Unsown Seeds): A phenomenon where rice plants naturally grow in the mountains without anyone having sown seeds.

The “Small Shinto Priest” Residing in the Sacred Tree

Within the shrine grounds, the huge 800-year-old cedar tree (goshimboku) holds a “mystery”. If you look at a certain part of a branch on the right side facing the Honden from a specific angle, it appears exactly like a “Shinto priest (kannushi) wearing an eboshi (traditional headwear) and praying with clasped hands”. This is not artificially carved but a natural formation. It is said that finding it will bring greater divine blessings (gorieki).

Anime Pilgrimage: The Connection to “Suzume”

In Makoto Shinkai’s anime film “Suzume”, a story unfolds where “doors of disaster” are closed, starting from Kyushu. While there are various theories about the direct inspiration locations, fans noted that the key element of the story, the “Kaname-ishi” (Keystone), and the concept of “sealing off disaster” that has continued since mythological times, strongly overlap with Kirishima Jingu’s history of preserving the Tenson Korin narrative and the image of Mt. Takachiho’s “Ama no Sakahoko”.

In particular, the old shrine site (Komiyashi) of Kirishima Jingu is the former location of shrine buildings that were lost to volcanic eruptions, and it still exudes a tranquil and mysterious atmosphere. This atmosphere of “a sacred place like a ruin where people once offered prayers” perfectly matches the film’s worldview. You are sure to experience a wondrous sensation, as if mythology and modern animation intersect.

Kirishima Jingu is not merely a tourist destination, but a place where mythology, history, and the romance of the late Edo period come alive. Beyond being captivated by the vermilion shrine buildings, why not take a stroll while imagining the sights Ryoma saw and pondering the mysteries of the Seven Wonders?

Quietly, yet powerfully, Ameku-gu jinja (Ameku-guu) is enshrined on the slopes of Tomari Kodai in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. This jinja, revered by the Ryukyu Kingdom’s royal government as one of the “Ryukyu Hachi-sha” (Eight Shrines of Ryukyu) since that era, envelops visitors in a mysterious tranquility that makes them forget the city’s hustle and bustle, and an atmosphere where ancient myths breathe.

Basic Information about Ameku-gu jinja

Ameku-gu jinja is located in Tomari, Naha City. Its founding is said to date back to the Chenghua era (1465-1487), and it is ranked fifth among the “Ryukyu Hachi-sha,” established for the protection of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

It enshrines the Kumano Sanjin (Three Kami of Kumano): Izanami-no-Mikoto, Hayatamao-no-Mikoto, and Kotosakao-no-Mikoto. It also strongly embodies aspects of “Utaki” (sacred groves), a unique Okinawan belief, and is affectionately known locally as “Ameku Gongen.”

Legend: The “Mysterious Beauty” Emitting Golden Light and the Cave Mystery

A highly fantastical legend surrounds the founding of Ameku-gu jinja.

Long ago, a man named Mekaru from this area encountered a beautiful woman in the Ameku forest. She appeared out of nowhere and vanished into a cave within the forest. Curious, Mekaru peered into the cave, and it is said to have been filled with a golden light.

When the high priest Sonkei heard this story and offered prayers, a divine oracle descended from the cave: “I am Kumano Gongen. Build a shrine on this land.” This is considered the beginning of Ameku-gu jinja. The cave within the jinja grounds is still carefully preserved as a sacred site where kami descended, and its mystical presence overwhelms visitors.

Mystery: The Unique “Three-Tiered” Architecture Built on a Cliff

Visitors to Ameku-gu jinja are often surprised by its unique architectural style. Built on a steep slope, it appears to be a single-story building from above, but it is actually a three-tiered structure extending underground.

Upper Level: Features the haiden (hall of worship), where general prayers are offered.
Middle and Lower Levels: Stairs descend down the cliffside to hokora (small shrines) dedicated to Benzaiten and Ryujin (Dragon Kami), as well as the legendary cave (Utaki) itself.

This unique style of worship, descending “underground,” evokes a feeling of stepping into another realm. Especially the lowest level, dedicated to Ryujin, has a cool, fresh atmosphere, making it a power spot where you can truly feel the enduring energy of Okinawa’s nature worship.

Behind the Scenes: A “Shrine of Rebirth” That Survived War

Ameku-gu jinja suffered the tragedy of having all its shrine buildings destroyed by fire during the Battle of Okinawa. After the war, it was temporarily placed under US military control, and there were times when even visiting for worship was difficult. However, it was rebuilt through the strong wishes and dedication of local residents.

While the current shrine buildings are made of concrete, the bedrock and caves forming its foundation have remained unchanged for hundreds, even thousands of years. Its enduring presence, protecting the memory of the land even as its form changes, can be said to symbolize the indomitable spirit of the Okinawan people.

Visiting Tips: Guidance from Ryujin and Goshuin

When you visit Ameku-gu jinja, be sure to explore not just the haiden, but also the “Gongendo” (Avatar Hall) and the hokora dedicated to “Ryujin” on the lower levels. Ryujin-sama, in particular, as the kami of water and bountiful harvests, has recently seen an increase in worshipers seeking financial luck and good fortune.

Additionally, collecting “Goshuin” (stamped calligraphy) as you visit the Ryukyu Hachi-sha is a popular activity. Ameku-gu jinja’s Goshuin often features powerful calligraphy along with Okinawan red tile or dragon motifs, making it a wonderful souvenir of your trip.

Ameku-gu jinja, where kami dwell in a cave beneath a cliff, despite being in the heart of Naha City. It is a unique sacred site in Okinawa, where the mystery of the legendary vanishing beauty and the pure energy of Ryujin intertwine.
