Emperor Shomu’s Tears? The “Miraculous Gold” that Saved the Great Buddha’s Construction

The history of Koganeyama jinja dates back approximately 1300 years to the Nara Period. At that time, Emperor Shomu was attempting to construct the gigantic “Great Buddha of Nara” at Todai-ji Temple. However, the biggest challenge was that no gold could be found within Japan to adorn the Great Buddha’s surface, relying entirely on imports.

In 749 (Tenpyo 21st year), when the project was stalled due to the gold shortage, a staggering 900 ryo (approximately 13 kg) of placer gold was presented from Wakuya (then known as Oda District, Mutsu Province). Emperor Shomu was so overjoyed by this that he changed the era name from “Tenpyo” to “Tenpyo-Kanpo”. It is no exaggeration to say that the gold mined from this region led to the completion of the Great Buddha and protected Japan’s Buddhist culture.

A Mystery Spanning 1000 Years: Where is the True “Kogane-yama”?

In fact, Koganeyama jinja holds a mystery: for a long time, its exact location was lost.

After the Heian Period, as gold production declined, the precise location of the jinja was forgotten. During the Edo Period, a prominent theory emerged that Kinkazan in Ishinomaki City, also visited by Matsuo Basho, was the site of Japan’s first gold discovery, leading to a long-standing debate.

However, Okumi, a kokugakusha (scholar of Japanese classics) during the Edo Period, identified the current location based on ancient documents. Furthermore, excavation surveys in 1957 (Showa 32) uncovered Nara Period roof tiles and building remains, proving beyond doubt that this was indeed “Japan’s first gold mining site.” It was the moment when the “golden sacred site,” buried in the shadows of history for over 1000 years, was resurrected.

The Golden Spirit Alive Today: An Unexpected Connection with Vegalta Sendai

Koganeyama jinja’s influence extends to unexpected places. The team color “Vegalta Gold” of J.League’s “Vegalta Sendai” actually originates from the fact that Japan’s first gold was mined in Wakuya Town, where Koganeyama jinja is located.

For this reason, the team often holds prayers for victory here, and signed jerseys and “hissho daruma” (victory daruma dolls) from players can sometimes be seen displayed within the shrine grounds. For sports fans, too, it is a place where they can receive the “golden power” that brings victory.

The Golden Torii Gate and Gold Panning Experience

At the jinja’s entrance, a “golden torii” gate, befitting its name, towers majestically, impressing all who visit. Adjacent to the jinja, at “Wakuya Manyo no Sato Tenpyo Roman-kan,” you can actually experience gold panning.

The experience of finding the same glittering gold that once saved the Great Buddha with your own hands is sure to captivate both adults and children. You can take home any placer gold you find, making it perhaps the strongest good luck charm.

Otomono Yakamochi, a poet of the Manyoshu anthology, celebrated the gold discovery in this region by composing the poem: “Sumero-gi no miyo sakaen to Azuma naru Mutsu-yama ni kogane-bana saku” (May the Emperor’s reign prosper, for in the eastern mountains of Mutsu, golden flowers bloom). Koganeyama jinja is where the romance of history and the power of financial fortune intersect. Why not visit once and experience its radiance firsthand?
