Could it be the origin of Hakodate’s name? History and legends related to “hako” (box)
The founding of Hakodate Hachimangu dates back to 1445 (Bun’an 2) in the Muromachi period. It began when Masamichi Kono, the lord of the land at the time, enshrined the Hachiman kami in the southeast corner of the mansion he built, called “Usukeshitate.”
In fact, there is a theory that because this mansion was shaped like a “hako” (box), this area came to be called “Hakodate” (箱館, the former name of present-day Hakodate). This means Hakodate Hachimangu is deeply connected to the very birth of the city, truly a place that can be called “the origin of Hakodate.”
Architectural Mystery: The unique “Shotei Hachimanzukuri”
The current main hall was completed in 1915 (Taisho 4), adopting a very rare architectural style called “Shotei Hachimanzukuri.” This style combines the elegant curves of “Shoteizukuri” (also known as Hiyoshizukuri) with the complex, overlapping roofs of “Hachimanzukuri” (also known as Gongenzukuri), and is celebrated as a masterpiece of Taisho-era shrine architecture.
With the deep green of Mount Hakodate at its back and overlooking the Tsugaru Strait, its majestic appearance emits a divine aura befitting its name as the “guardian deity of the North.”
The “134 Stone Steps” that bring good luck in contests, and “Gaman Udon”
The approach to the shrine features 134 steep stone steps. It is said that climbing all of them will improve one’s luck in contests. Additionally, a shrine-operated kitchen car sometimes appears on the grounds, where the famous “Gaman Udon” is popular. This udon, imbued with the meaning of “enduring hardship and opening up good fortune,” has become a hidden gem that warms the hearts and bodies of visitors.
Anime Pilgrimage: As a setting for Detective Conan, Golden Kamuy, and Love Live!
Hakodate Hachimangu has also become an essential pilgrimage site for fans of many anime works.
Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Five-Star Guidepost
In the movie released in 2024, it appears as one of the important settings in the story. The impressive stone steps and shrine grounds are meticulously depicted, and after the movie’s release, many fans visit seeking “the scenery Heiji and Conan saw.”
Golden Kamuy
As Hakodate is the site of the series’ final battle, Hakodate Hachimangu is highlighted as a related spot. Very close to the jinja is the “Hekketsu-hi” monument, which commemorates those who died in the Hakodate War. It is a must-visit location for fans tracing the footsteps of Hijikata Toshizo.
Love Live! Sunshine!!
Hakodate is depicted as the hometown of the rival unit “Saint Snow” in the series. Since the famous “Hachiman-zaka” slope takes its name from Hakodate Hachimangu, it is beloved by fans (Love Livers) as a key pilgrimage site.
An inside story known by few: The “Acacia” for matchmaking
While Hakodate Hachimangu is strongly associated with prayers for victory, there is an acacia tree on the grounds known as a “matchmaking tree.” There’s a rumor that wishing upon this tree will bring good relationships, making it a popular secret power spot among female visitors.
Hakodate Hachimangu is a place where history, architecture, and the world of anime intersect. Why not take a moment to reflect on Hakodate’s long journey through time as you climb the stone steps, one by one?
