A Mysterious Space Nestled in Ameyoko’s “Gap”
Ameyoko is one of Japan’s most vibrant shopping streets. Right in the middle of it, tucked away in a small gap between the bustling shops, stands Ueno Tenjin (Sugawara Jinja) with its quiet torii gate. First-time visitors are often surprised by its “hideaway” feel. The approach, which seems to be drawn into the buildings, is enveloped in a strange silence; once you step inside, the commotion of the outside world miraculously disappears.
Episode and Behind-the-Scenes Story: Post-War Reconstruction and Ameyoko’s Guardian Kami
This jinja has a deep connection with the history of Ameyoko. Ameyoko developed from a post-war black market, but Sugawara Jinja has watched over this area since ancient times.
Despite its location, densely surrounded by buildings and vulnerable to disasters like fire, it has overcome many difficulties and remains standing today. Locals often say that “the prosperity of Ameyoko’s businesses and the peace of this town are thanks to Tenjin-sama,” and it is not uncommon to see shopkeepers quietly offer prayers before opening their stores.
A Hidden Gem for “Success in Exams” Known to Those in the Know
While Yushima Tenmangu (Yushima Tenjin) is famous for Tenjin-sama in the Ueno area, a considerable number of students intentionally visit this Ueno Tenjin. The reason is an urban legend that “it’s hard to find, which means those who find it receive special divine favor.”
Furthermore, as Ameyoko is a symbol of a town that “doesn’t fall” (meaning its economy and vibrancy don’t decline), an increasing number of visitors come to pray for “not failing” their exams, embracing this auspicious connection.
Anime Pilgrimage Information: Setting of “Mitsuboshi Colors”
This jinja is also known as a pilgrimage site for the popular anime “Mitsuboshi Colors,” which is set in Ueno. In scenes where “Colors,” three elementary school girls who protect the peace of Ueno, run around Ameyoko, the surroundings of this jinja and signs from Ameyoko appear.
In the anime, the entire town of Ueno is depicted as their playground and something to protect. Sugawara Jinja, as a part of the “everyday Ueno” they safeguard, has become an essential pilgrimage spot for fans.
Points for Visiting
Its location makes it convenient to stop by while enjoying street food or shopping in Ameyoko. However, it blends so seamlessly into its surroundings that you might walk past it if you don’t look carefully. Look for the red torii gate near the “Ameyoko Center Building,” tucked between the signs. You should be able to feel a unique power, like an urban mystery spot.
